When Love Needs Space: A Poem on "Break"
You said, “Let’s take a break,” — not “let’s break apart,”
Just some space to breathe, not a shattered heart.
A pause, like a comma in a run-on line,
Where love could catch up, where time could align.
You said, “Let’s just see where this will go,”
Not “I don’t love you anymore, you know.”
It wasn’t meant to be the end of us,
Just a moment’s silence, not a final hush.
We didn’t say goodbye—
Just whispered, “Not right now.”
No slammed doors, no final scream,
Just silence heavy as a vow.
You looked at me like you still cared,
But wore a tired kind of love.
Not gone… just worn,
Like a prayer the wind let go of.
“We need BREAK,” you softly said,
As if distance could untangle pain.
But how do you breathe without someone
Who once ran in your every vein?
I nodded like I understood,
Though every heartbeat begged you to stay.
How do you pause forever's rhythm,
And not expect the song to fray?
I still imagine the table for two,
Still turn at the sound of your name.
Love doesn’t learn the rules of absence,
It still plays the same sweet game.
Like standing in the pouring rain,
Waiting for a sun that won’t dawn.
But still, I hold the space for you,
Where our laughter used to lie.
Because a break is not a funeral—
Though sometimes, it feels like goodbye.
